12 January - The Queen is the first reigning monarch to open the New Zealand Parliament.

3 February - The Queen becomes the first reigning monarch to visit Australia, visiting locations including Victoria, the Great Barrier Reef, Adelaide and Perth.

11 May - The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh end the Commonwealth tour they had begun the previous year. They are met at Gibraltar by Prince Charles and Princess Anne and return to London on the new yacht BRITANNIA. Prime Minister Winston Churchill joins them for the last leg of the journey.

28 June - The first State Visit of The Queen's reign begins with the arrival of the King Gustaf VI and Queen Louise of Sweden.

14 July - The Queen reviews 10,000 members of UK police forces in Hyde Park.

14 October - Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia is welcomed to the UK for the second incoming State Visit of The Queen's reign.
